Charging devices

Can you use basically any 30 pin dock connector charger with the iPhone? My friend has some sort of charger for his 5G iPod. Would this work with my iPhone?

From what I've read (I don't have mine yet) the connector is the same but it is deep enough in the phone that you have to have separate items to connect and charge the iPhone. It sticks out in my memory because it was a major complaint initially - i.e. hundreds spent purchasing car charging kits and the like were 'needlessly' made obsolete with the iPhone.
