Charging iPad via usb

Will the iPad charge via usb off my computer? It says not charging, but I understand that is when the screen is on and when the screen is off it will be charging. Any confirmation? Thanks!
 
Standard USB ports don't provide enough power to noticeably charge iPads. They provide a little power, and if you leave it plugged in for several days the battery will charge.

Some new computers come with increased power USB ports (I forget the actual name) and Macs can charge iPads from USB. I charge my iPad 2 just fine from my Macbook Pro.
