Lately, i've started using my ipad charger to charge my iPhone. It seems to charge much faster. I'm not an electrical engineer, so I'm not sure if this could be a potential problem or not - is this safe?

Perfectly safe. I've noticed that the iPad charger charges the iPhone 4 pretty quickly as well.

As pointed out in other places, it is indeed safe (and faster). If there's any doubt as to whether this is safe for your iPhone or not, not that on the product page for the iPad 10W USB Power Adapter on the online Apple store (http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC359LL/A?fnode=MTc0MjU4NjA&mco=MTcyMTgxODg) it lists all 4 generations of iPhone, 3rd and 4th generation iPod touches, 6th generation iPod nano, and the 4th generation iPod shuffle as compatible devices in addition to the iPad.
