Hey all, so I’m having an odd issue. I have:
  • 2020 13” MBP 8th Gen with 16gb ram
  • LG Ultrafine 4K
So the issue I’m having is when I plug the MBP into the thunderbolt 3 port with the included TB3 cable, the video signal works fine but the MacBook won’t start charging. It will initially make the charging sound but the battery indicator will say “Not Charging, on battery power”.

I’m able to work around it by first plugging the MBP into the wall charger, then plugging in the monitor into a different port, then remove the wall charger. At this point the TB3 connection to the monitor will charge the Mac 🤷‍♂️ and there will be no issue until I unplug and try to reconnect.

  • I’ve tried 3 different TB3 cables, so I don’t think it’s the cable.
  • I’ve tried both ports on both the monitor and the MBP, all have the same issue.
  • The Mac charges just fine with the Apple wall charger
Any insight anyone could give on if this is a known issue (I’ve searched and haven’t found anything), if either the monitor or mbp could be the issue, and if there’s any fix that anyone could know of.
