Is it possible to charge a USB-C MacBook Pro (2018) from the USB 3.0 port on a monitor such as my Dell P2415Q using a USB-A to USB-C cable?

I think that theoretically USB 3.0 ports only need to output 5W, so presumably it is going to be too slow to be of use, but has anyone tried this and found that they output higher power in reality?

(For background, I'm looking to avoid having to disentangle my charger from my desk all of the time, whenever I take my laptop elsewhere, so it would suit me to have the Apple charge as a portable item, and just have a permanent cable on my desk. Using a cable from my monitor would also save me a power socket).

I doubt it will work, no. I believe the power source needs to support USB PD (power delivery) for a MBP to charge from it.

Okay, thanks - I suspect you are right.

I'll maybe try it if I ever have a USB-USB-C cable but I'm not holding my breath.

there's no point in trying, it has nothing to do with the cable. your monitor will not output power anywhere close to what your mbp needs.
