Dear all,

I have a question regarding my Dell Display, which is a Dell U2717D and which I have connected with the DP to USB-C connector to my 2021 14 inch MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, the MBP is not charging via this connection, and I wonder if this is normal for this display, or if there is any chance I can bypass power through the DP/USB-C connection? Anybody knows for this specific display?

Cheers

mM

To charge devices, the display would have to support USB-C Power Delivery (PD).
Your display doesn't even have USB-C but a simple DisplayPort input (video/audio only).
What your cable does, is to use the MacBooks USB-C plug in USB-C DisplayPort (DP Alt Mode) to send the video/audio signal to the displays DisplayPort input.
Nothing more is possible with this constellation.
Either use the MagSafe 3 port to charge the MacBook or a separate USB-C power adapter which occupies an additional USB-C port of your Mac.
You could also use an active USB-C hub which offers PD and has a DisplayPort output. This way you only have to connect one cable to your MacBook. Maybe there are hubs that offer PD and USB-C DP Alt Mode so you can use your existing cable.

Yep, you need a display with native USB-C power delivery (and usually input) to get USB charging.

I think Dell started adding USB-C in their 2020 year models -- my Dell U2720Q can charge my Macbook just fine.
