Chat application over wireless network?(not internet)

Basically I want to create a network on my Macbook and have other laptops connect to it, and then be able to chat with each other. Preferably compatible with both XP and Mac.

Any way to do this?
 
Looks like im going to try Bonjour. Pidgin for windows people, adium for apple users.
