OpenAI today updated ChatGPT with an improved memory feature that allows the chatbot to remember more about your conversations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that ChatGPT can "reference all your past conversations," allowing for a more personalized experience.

ChatGPT will remember context from previous conversations, such as preferences and interests, using that information to tailor the responses that it provides. You can add something directly to ChatGPT's memory by telling it to "remember" a fact.

The option to reference saved memories is opt-in, and can be toggled off in the ChatGPT settings under Personalization. There is an option to manage all of the memories that ChatGPT has stored, including deleting them all or deleting just one or two. ChatGPT will save memories indefinitely, but they can be removed at any time.

The updated memory features are rolling out to all Plus and Pro tier users, but the functionality is not available in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

Follow me: Everyone bow your head. Let us pray…. “GPT, take the wheel…. we can’t fix this….”

Honestly, people may be upset about this... But an AI that cannot remember anything is just DRASTICALLY less useful than one that can.

You can choose to not trust the data it is storing, but if they don't actually delete saved conversations when you request, they can be held massively liable by both California and EU privacy laws.

storing more personal information - way to go!
At least there's a toggle, let's hope it actually works
Remembering past conversations is how it should be done, you don't talk to a real person, and they can't remember what you said at all even a few hours ago. If people want an assistant to feel real and useful, then they have to be able to remember what you said.

I could have a voice chat and then ask it something even a few years down the line, and it remembers what I said perfectly.

I am glad it's getting better. I love this feature. I have multiple lengthy projects I am working on at any time where i use ChatGPT to help, and continuing where I left off has been amazing. Like having a personal assistant helping you at your convenience. Only a matter of time before it may have the ability to add folders and other tools to help with projects. I know there are API's that companies use to include in their software, but it never seems to work well for me.
Having said that, I should probably try Google's NotebookLM

In the meantime long time users from EU are already enjoying this memory experience, cause it remembers everything it talked about earlier.

This is an improvement.

I need a personal assistant that monitors me and gives me advice.

I recommend using the app on your mobile device, because it will be stored in it, I never use the desktop app; it is not stored in the app, but if I use it, I don’t use it with my account, just not signed in.

ChatGPT has had the ability to add things for it to memorize for a while. Expanding that feature would be a good thing. However, I often use temporary chats specifically to avoid things being remembered. If I ask ChatGPT some random question that only has relevance in the moment (e.g., "What is the capital of North Dakota?"), I don't want it thinking it should always find the Bismarck angle on how to answer my questions.

Another change I have noticed in ChatGPT, a few days back a new ChatBot appeared in my sidebar. It says it is an experiment by ChatGPT to give bots more personality. They want to see if that changes the way users interact with ChatGPT. The particular personality it put in this bot is a smart ass. It started out being personally insulting, which was funny, but quickly got old. I told it to tone down the personal insults. Now it is like a sarcastic smart aleck. I find this new bot more engaging to interact with unless I am in a serious, get-work-done mode.

I hope Apple implements this in a way where memories are stored client-side, so my Mac has its own memory, separate from my iPhone. Then my Mac and iPhone can compare notes themselves, learning from each other in the background.

Some day soon OpenAI will know as much about me as Google and Meta already do.

I'm in the "closing the gate after the horse has bolted" category with my own privacy.
Google's knowledge about me might actually have saved my life.
Had a serious medical condition a few years ago which doctor and specialist had given up on finding an answer for me.
Then one day YouTube threw up a video by a doctor (Berg) and he basically described all my symptoms.
That turned out to be the issue and I'm certain it was my google searching that had caused youtube to present me with that video as a top suggestion.

Yet to see a downside to what they know about me. Maybe I'll change my mind when I'm in a concentration camp for political undesirables.

I’ve never used any AI products. It might be the next big thing but I just don’t trust the people behind it.
