Cheap (or free), simple, design software

Does anyone know of a good app for designing small projects?

I'm looking for something to help with small projects, like laying out a design for a TV stand, bookshelves, tables, things like that.

Something I can play with to design something, then print out the plans with measurements.

I suggest you look at SketchUp. This was once owned by Google, but they sold it off to Trimble five years ago.

I believe there is one version of SketchUp that is free, others are at different paid levels.
