Basically all I want to do, is to be able to watch TV on my iMac. My house has cable TV, and I would like to be able to hook up the coaxial cable to my computer somehow. The ability to record TV shows would be nice too, but mainly, I just want to be able to tap into our cable with my iMac.

Is there any other way to do this without throwing down $200 for an EyeTV? In a perfect world, I would buy an EyeTV and be on my way. But $200? That's way out of my budget.

The Hauppague 950 I have is on sale for $50 around here add in the ~$80 for the EyeTV software you get $130 for the total or roughly 1/3 off, in other words look for a used/new supported card that will work with the bought stand alone software equals cheaper.
