Here
Let me preface by saying that I in no way mind paying for apps I use a lot to support developers (I often buy IAPs just to support them.)

I'm looking for an app similar to Name Mangler to batch rename image files (I hate the IMG_2439) thing. The thing is, this isn't an app I would use often (maybe once or twice a year). I hate to spend $18.99 on a scarcely used utility.

Are there any cheap or free alternatives?

OS can do it

You can't use the contextual menu? Yosemite supports batch rename in the Finder.

Automator can batch rename files too.

Yes, and you can also create a workflow to use as needed.

That said, I use A Better Finder Renamer. It's very easy to use and has a number of features, such as fetching file names from a file; which makes it easy to rename a bunch of files with names that do not follow any pattern.

it doesn't however meet your free of cheap standard since it is $20.00 (But for me was worth every penny)

I used to use Name Mangler extensively. Now I use Automator. The interface is not as simple as Name Mangler, but for infrequent use, it should work quite well for you.

Thank you, that's what I ended up using. Automator is a lot more powerful and flexible than many people think.
