We currently have the cheapest family plan on ATT. We never use close to all our minutes. I seem to remember hearing about cheaper lower rate plans that ATT does not advertise. Is this true, and how do I go about getting it?

The cheapest advertised family plan for iPhone is 700 minutes. But you can call them to downgrade it to familytalk 550 and save $10 a month.

im on a secondary line of a family plan which has 450 minutes a month. none of us use the minutes too much. anyway, I have an iphone 2g and still only get charge the standard 9.99 for the second line. I also talked to an ATT rep the other day who said when i upgrade to a 3GS, that wont change, just the data plan. If you have an existing family plan and your primary line isnt an iphone then i think you retain a standard minutes plan.

You will still retain the number of minutes equal to the new plan. Ex: Say you have 1000 roll over minutes on a 700 minute plan. You will only keep 550 when dropping to the 550 plan.
