You best bet is to look for discount sales. For example, I occasionally get 10% discount card for Target. It's not much, but since they sell iPods you can save $29.90 off a $299 16gb Touch. Better still, Target often puts them on "sale" by throwing in a $30 to $50 gift card with purchase. Since it's not a discounted price, you still get 10% off the $299 price AND get the gift card to use later.
Best Buy does similar deals, and if you're a best buy card holder you'll get frequent discount coupons in the mail. Look at WalMart too, as they'll usually have iPods for a little less than everywhere else.
