I need a 4S for testing purposes. An unlocked one from Apple is $450.

Or I can get one (under contract) for $0, then pay the ETF (starts at $325 and goes down by $10/month).

Even if I cancel before the end of the first month, aren't I saving $125 by buying and canceling?

Not really. You are still going to have to pay for service on it since when you start up a new contract they bill you for the remainder of the month you join and a month in advance. That can easily be over $125 with all tax/fees/proration.

Plus you are taking a ding on your credit if you don't currently have an account with the carrier you are buying your 4s from.

Get all the details, you generally have to pay for the first month, there's activation fees, then decide if its cheaper. If it will be cheaper, it won't be by much.

I can add a line for $40/month (since it's the 2-year subsidy).
Plus $36 activation and any partial month charges, and, yeah, you're right.

Damn math! ;-)

Check Swappa, you may be able to find one on there pretty cheap. I've had pretty good experiences buying and selling there.
