I am looking to add an external GPS unit for my ipad. I have seen a couple that people are using, one that was around $50. Is that the cheapest way to do it or are there even cheaper GPS units out there that will work?

Wow! No one responded!

I am looking for one too - for my iPad 2 3G without a contract. (GPS does not work without a contract, so I am looking for a GPS receiver to do the job.)

Yes, GPS does work without a contract.
It works fine on mine.

As henchman said, u dont need data contract to use the gps unless u r using Google Maps or other apps that do not store maps on yr ipad.

As for using an external bluetooth receiver, i dont think its possible unless the bluetooth specs has changed bet ipad1 n ipad2. I had to jb my ipad1 to get the bt receiver to work
