Hi, I want to get an iPhone eventually (probably will wait for the 5th gen), but anyhow, what is the cheapest plan I can possibly get? I went to the AT&T store and they said the least expensive is $15, with 200mb of internet. That seems too much for my taste (I know, I'm frugal).

But then I saw Ebay and Craigslist and noticed many were buying their iphones off of there. If I were to buy it off of ebay/craigslist, can I just insert my SIM card, under a family data plan, in the iphone and get it to work as a phone?

Thanks!

ATT has software that will detect you are using an iPhone. Unless it is a pay as you go plan then they will eventually add the 15 dollar data plan to your phone.

There's no such thing as a family data plan.

Options to go cheap:

1. family plan to share voice minutes, no texting, $15 data. Google voice for texting.

2. GoPhone, no data plan

3. Straight Talk $45/month. Data included. You have to buy a nokia phone however with some additional upfront cost.

You can try to fly under the radar with AT&T by getting a dumbphone with a data block, but they may eventually detect the iphone anyway.
