16gb... Adding to a family plan as an upgrade on Verizon. Is the best I can do now $199?

Doesn't BestBuy offer a $50. discount (in the form of a gift card)?
That would bring your price down to $149.

I think Wallmart is also running its own discounting but perhaps they require you also sign up using a SIM offered in-store.

Does Best Buy still offer the $50 gift card? That would work well for me if they do.

I also want to buy AppleCare+ so maybe I should just buy at an Apple Store. Going to add this as part of a family plan on Verizon that's due for an upgrade; does that mean I have to go to Verizon?

I went to best buy had them price match fry's price of 159 then used the 50 gift card best buy was offering. Ended up paying 109 per iPhone. I don't think you will find a better deal then that

Looks like its only 149 at fry's now so you can probably get that down to 99 for the 5

That's a pretty great deal... unfortunately there are no Frys stores local to me.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and pay the full $199. It's only a small portion of the TCO.

If you are looking for a 64gb model I would say frys but other wise best buy. I was looking for a 64gb white model and tried for a week and a half and ended up going to frys to get the last 64gb white phone they had in stock. They are both offering 50.00 off so the price will be the same.

Walmart is probably the cheapest. They sales at times, all the way down to $127. They also only charge sales tax on the subsidized price if you buy it at that price.
