I’m thinking USB-C to SATA cable and a cheap 128GB drive

I dont have enough space after Sierra And Win10 and needing Sierra buffer, to install a 3rd os

Thoughts?

My externals are also painfully slow spinning disk, so I’d need an external SSD solution

find a cheap amazon SSD (i got a 240GB one for like, $40) and slap it into any old USB3 SATA enclosure (or find a USB-C one if you don't already own a USB3 - USB-C hub). Should be $60 tops, less if you go for a smaller drive.

Mojave shouldn't need more than 32GB to install

Here's a 120gb SSD for $25:

Is that cheap enough?

I DO have one of these drives, and it's... well, it's just ok.
It seems a little slower than drives from other manufacturers, but... it's still ok, and pretty good when you consider what it costs...

$25 will do thanks!

Probably will go for it

What’s the best way to (safely) hook this up to my usb-c MacBook Pro?

Looking for safe and cheap. This will be a cheap overall project :D

I just bought a Crucial BX300 120GB for $42 on Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I'm putting Mountain Lion to use a couple of apps, one of which would cost $500 to upgrade but worked pretty well for what I needed to do in Mountain Lion. I may use it once a month. Other than getting it working, I haven't used it much but it has good reviews. Certainly has a better reputation than the cheapest SSD's - whether that's worth it is a value judgement. For $17 more, I would buy the BX300 over a econo model any day, even for my limited use.

(Be aware that smaller capacity SSD's typically don't perform as well as their larger counterparts in the same product line.)

One thing to consider about the smaller drives and with econo models is the endurance. If you're not using it much, that's not much of a concern. The BX300 120GB has a rated endurance of 60TBW, which is still plenty for most people with typical usage.
