I'm thinking about buying one in the near future and was wondering if there are any places that sell it cheaper than Apple? Also does the online Apple store offer refurbs? Thanks for any help.

you can pickup some good bargins on ebay

just remember to look at the sellers history before buying a large ticket item like this.
Look at their feedback, past sales etc..

I believe I saw on one of the threads on this forum that the Apple Store does have refurbished units.

I have also read that in 99% of the cases these are better than new because they go through extra testing that isn't done on units straight from the factories.

Cheapest available unless you want to navigate the ebay/craigslist waters

From what I understand the refurbishing process on the iPod touch / iPhone, and presumably iPad is that they take the internals and put it in a new case. That way you get a brand new device (from the outside) with pre-burned in hardware. Win win, and considering the cost, win. Too bad they don't sell refurbs in retail stores.

If you want to buy new, I suggest going through retailers where you don't have to pay sales tax.

If you can hold off for a few months:

1) There will be a glut of used iPads for sale in March ahead of the presumed iPad2 launch. All the early adopters (like me, I admit) will be rushing to dump their original iPad as soon as the next model is announced.

2) Just wait to see what iPad2 brings. More storage? Faster proc? More RAM? Better screen? And the inevitable killer s/w feature that won't be available on the original iPad b/c that's how Apple rolls.

I got mine Open Box'ed at Best Buy. That was 40 or so bucks off. Then if I bought it in Oregon, another 9% or so off (no sales tax). My open box iPad was in perfect condition and I loved the small discount.

I just got a 32GB Wifi + 3G for $520 shipped on eBay with the Apple case. It just needs a wall charger. I got lucky and jumped on one. I was a little nervous (too good to be true) but it came today and I've been using it all afternoon. Perfect.

If you know anyone military...We received a few coupons for various Exchanges, they're scratch off for 5, 10, 15, 25, 50% off. My dad purchased on from the Navy Exchange and scratched off 10%, saved 70 some dollars off a new 32gb 3g (got it for gps, not data). The great thing is a 14 day return window with no restocking fee.
