Check USB power "charging iOS devices"

I may be the exception here, but I'm interested in not charging my iPad when connected to my Mac. I'm using a non-powered USB hub right now and the iPad shows "not charging" by the battery indicator. HOWEVER, I think it is charging very slowly because I see the battery % go up throughout the day. How can I check in OS X to see if the USB device connect is being supplied power?
