The 2017 nTB MacBook Pro has only 1 fan, and some here say, a lower quality fan than other MacBook pros.

So follow this thought process:

  1. I need a MacBook Pro - I had a 2015, it was fine, but it couldn't drive a 4K display smoothly
  2. The 2017 models have faster and more powerful components, ok let's look at them
  3. I need a proper keyboard with real keys like ESC .. so thats the nTB then. It has an Intel Iris Pro 640 integrated GPU that's far more capable than the Intel Iris 6100 in my 2015.
  4. Apples website says the nTB can power 3 - yes 3 - 4K displays. Cool, it should be able to handle one display then.
  5. Check the number and quality of fans for cooling.
  6. Buy it.
  7. Find it overheats and that damages the already badly designed keyboard and melts the glue around the display in clamshell mode when connected to an NEC 4K display that Apple's own website says is ok.

So how reasonable is step 5?

Do you check (5) every time you buy a laptop? Or do you assume the laptop is a successful design and has adequate cooling for the tasks it is designed for?

My late 2015 15-MBP drives a 4K with no problems. It has a GT750M. I use it for FCPX. It doesn't get overly warm, but I don't use it in clamshell.

All that said, I have no idea how you would check the fans. I mean really check them. If you're worried, buy AppleCare. If it shows any sign of too much heat - up to and including combustion - you'll be covered long before the 3 years are up.

You can disagree with the content of another member's statement or give your evidence or opinion to dispute their claims, but you may not make a negative personal characterization about that member.
  2. Insults. Slurs and insults against groups of people based on negative-stereotyping and obvious generalizations fall into the category of trolling and will be treated as such.
  3. Taunting. Mocking or taunting another forum member is not acceptable. Posts that ridicule another member or obviously exaggerate or misstate their views may be removed.

I always check the functionality if purchasing from a physical store, however testing for heating I don't see as practical as it takes time for the chassis to fully.

Best bet is the more detailed reputable reviews and the experience of actual owners.
