The 2017 nTB MacBook Pro has only 1 fan, and some here say, a lower quality fan than other MacBook pros.
So follow this thought process:
So how reasonable is step 5?
Do you check (5) every time you buy a laptop? Or do you assume the laptop is a successful design and has adequate cooling for the tasks it is designed for?
So follow this thought process:
- I need a MacBook Pro - I had a 2015, it was fine, but it couldn't drive a 4K display smoothly
- The 2017 models have faster and more powerful components, ok let's look at them
- I need a proper keyboard with real keys like ESC .. so thats the nTB then. It has an Intel Iris Pro 640 integrated GPU that's far more capable than the Intel Iris 6100 in my 2015.
- Apples website says the nTB can power 3 - yes 3 - 4K displays. Cool, it should be able to handle one display then.
- Check the number and quality of fans for cooling.
- Buy it.
- Find it overheats and that damages the already badly designed keyboard and melts the glue around the display in clamshell mode when connected to an NEC 4K display that Apple's own website says is ok.
