Checking LTE coverage prior to activation - Verizon

I bought a 16GB Verizon iPad 3 refurbished from Apple's website.

When I turn it on, I get a Verizon 3G signal - but I don't have an account, using it over WiFi right now. Would it say LTE or 4G if that service existed in my area? I am testing this with WiFi turned off.

I've driven around to a couple places I might use it, like work - always says 3G. I'd like to know before I shell out $35 activation fee and $20 for service. If 3G is all I can get, then I'll try an AT&T model.

It will say LTE if you are receiving that. You can't go by coverage maps because real works results will differ.

Here in Denver, I should have excellent LTE coverage on AT&T but I don't get it at all. No one I know gets LTE in my area either.

you wont get LTE unless you have an activated Verizon LTE sim card in it. the internal radio will "show" a 3G signal is available, as most non active CDMA devices do. however, you cant get LTE without the SIM. so until you get an account, it wont show.

if you want to see local LTE coverage, check verizons website.
