The North Michigan Avenue Apple Store rolled out its "first in the nation" Studio Series classes this week. These are 10-person classes, most of them 4 sessions of two hours each, for 8 total hours of education. The price: a bargain at $99.00 USC.
I am thinking about tossing the old VHS-C camcorder and joining the digital moviemaking fun, but I want to "test drive" it before I start pouring money into a new hobby. Having already attended the freebie "Intro to Digital Movies on the Mac" session in the theater last week, I decided to invest some time and a little money in the Studio Series class.
The first Digital Movie Making classes were held today. Each attendee got a Canon ZR60 digital movie camera and a 15" powerbook to work with during the class. We also got course books and blank tapes that are ours to keep.
The class was held on the 4th floor of the beautiful new store in a fantastic classroom overlooking the skylight/rooftop lawn of the lower section of the store. The woman responsible for coordinating this education experiment was in from Cupertino to observe and participate in the class.
The instructor of the Digital Movie Making class I attended is an experienced TV news cameraman, technical director, and all around digital media pro. The class was well-paced and well-designed. I'm looking forward to next week's session, and I'm going to try to get my wife to attend the "Getting Started" class on Saturday (she's still mostly afraid of computers).
Please spread the word about this great new offering. $99 is an incredibly good deal for top quality computer education. Plus, it's an excuse to visit the beautiful new store every week for a month.
If things go well in Chicago, expect a roll-out of this type of class to other Apple Store locations.
