Hi all, I am looking for a good reliable portable external hard drive, since he is not tech savvy, I will be the one managing his photos and videos from devices he uses, and he has the video bug, and likes shooting lots of video, and I have been just offloading his content along with mine onto a big portable SSD drive, but now I need and would like something to offload his content onto a drive of his own, it is taking too much space on mine.

I had a bad experience with a Western Digital portable spinner hard drive of mine, that failed, and it turned out that somehow the actual drive inside it was soldered to the circuits and enclosure, so I could not remove it. So I want a drive that I could remove if I had to.

I would actually prefer to get a bare drive and put it in a separate enclosure.

I am torn between trying to get a SSD drive, which are more expensive than traditional spinner drives. If he gets a new smart phone with video capability, he will probably be taking lots of videos and photos, so I want a drive that will not fill up right away, but will have some space.

He also wants and likes to see/view the videos and photos right away, so a hard drive or a way for the content that could be connected to a TV would be nice to. Otherwise, I am faced with burning and making multiple DVDs to view in a DVD player, and I do not have the time for that.

Any input would be much appreciated.

If you don’t really need portability and you really need large capacity then stationed spinner hard drive should meet your needs. Otherwise get SSD ext drive as they are really fast and physically much smaller & lighter.
