This Digital Audio forum has been very useful in understanding and making some choices for a start-up home recording mostly for voice and instruments like harmonium, tabla and acoustic guitar.

I have a Mac Pro 2010 single hexacore with 6GB RAM.
I believe to be able to record either one or max 2 source at time the Presounus Firestudio mobile will be a good option for the audio interface.

Now to choose a ra best value for money mic. From internet searches, I have short-listed the Behringer B-1 or the Rode NT-1a. Anyone can suggest between these two or any other mic in similar range.

Thanks

You are comparing a great mic (Rode) to a cheap copy. However the Rodes sells for 2 1/2 times the price of the B-1 and maybe just for home use you can't justify the price of the Rode mic.

If you have a $100 budget why not look at the Audio Technica AT2020? I'd not go near anything with "Behringer" written on it.

I think what yu are really asking is if paaying more than double the price is worth it. I think that depends on the over all quality of the rest of your setup. What is the room like? and also if you are buying everything all at once and need to get the price down but I think the microphone is one piece of gear worth spending money on, if you have the money

I checked the price of the two mics on BHPhotovideo.
The cost of the Rode NT1a is US$ 219 and includes the shock-mount with pop filter and cable. The cost of the AT2020 is US$ 140+ when all the accessories to match the NT1a are included. I have just started to build the system and would set it up in a attic. So would like to start with a reasonable mic so that do not have to change it if I don't like the sound.

So if I were to spent US$ 219, the Rode NT1a would be a good buy or are there other better option at that price level.

Chris may disagree, but i think the AT2020 is better than the Rode.

+1. More neutral. The Rode is great on kick drums when I can't put a mic inside and outside the drum, haven't found many other uses for it to be honest (I own a pair too btw). Usually far too sibilant and metallic for vocals...

The AT2020 is far more flexible. Also check out sE Electronics microphones - the sE2000A is also a worthy budget contender, as is the sE1A...

I don't know if I disagree or not. I was thinking the AT2020 may be his best deal but the OP asked abut two other mics.

It's always a problem to know what to say with these A vs. B questions because you don't know it he even considered C, D, E, F and G.

It is probably because of my naivety on the subject that I started with two options that I shortlisted from various sources on the internet. As I mentioned in my last message- My objective is to start with a reasonably good mic.

From the above responses, I would like to rephrase my question as follows:

If I had an overall budget of US$ 200 for mic(s), which would be the best value for money:

1. One mic, if so which one at that price, or
2. two mics, which ones
