chopping up a MP4

I have created an MP4 file and I now would like to chop it up into smaller pieces with specific start and stop points which I can only determine by actually watching the clip and noting start stop points from the video. Is there a good software that will allow me to do this. Your sage advise is most appreciated by this MAC newbie. Thanks
