choppy audio in iMovie (exports OK)

When editing in iMovie, dragging my mouse across a clip used to produce smooth audio on my 2006 model iMac. Now with a new mini server, it produces choppy/stuttering audio that's hard to follow and very uncomfortable to hear. I can't imagine why... this computer is faster and even the integrated graphics seem better than a 5 year old video card (not that it would affect audio, would it?).

Have a choppy playback is completely normal. As long as, your exported video is okay, then the problem is just the speed of your hard drive or your mac mini's slow graphics card. Some of the low end Mac mini's have very slow graphics. iMovie 11 is highly dependent on fast graphics cards. The mac mini's with the dedicated graphics cards do much better.

So if the graphics stutter (which I don't mind), then the audio stutters with it?

It happens even when I "detach" the audio... almost painful playback- as a strobe light is to video, the same effect happens to the sound.
