Chrome started freezing my whole system (2009 iMac, Snow Leopard) in the past few weeks about 1-3 times daily for a couple minutes each time; it started after I updated flash for Safari. But I'm thinking Chrome updates Flash internally and automatically so that Safari's Flash wouldn't impact it. Also, Safari runs just fine. What is going on here!

Is re-installing Chrome the best bet?

Ya.. uninstall chrome and reinstall it. Its the best option.

Seconded. Make sure you delete the Chrome folder within Application Support as well as the preferences called "com.google.Chrome". Also make sure you download the latest stable version.
