I was thinking about getting a mac pro and cinema display when they are upgraded. Does anyone use their display also as a tv? Can I buy (besides the apple tv) something that I can plug my cable into so when not using the computer, my display is a fully functional tv?

I guess it really depends on what kinds of connections are available on the "new" cinema display. I would doubt that VGA and/or components would be available. I would guess that DisplayPort and DVI at the minimum. Perhaps HDMI as well.

So if you want to watch TV on it with the Mac turned off, then you would need a cable box. Most (if not all) cable boxes have HDMI. If the ACD has DVI, then all you'd need is an adapter.

One last thing is whether the ACD will accept TV resolutions. The cable box will output either 720p or 1080i (perhaps 1080p). Whether the ACD will, is up for debate.
