cinema display with ibook

hey there guys ... anyone ever gotten an old school (clear plastic) cinema display to work with a new ibook. I have a 20 inch display that i want to use as a second screen with my 12 inch iBook. However, silly apple doesnt suppost using a vga connection that the iBook sports. I bought a DVI to VGA adaptor but it now means that my cinema display is going ADC > DVI > VGA, so when i plug it in, the ibook sees that there is a monitor connected, but will not power it. The screen stays black.

any help would be great.
