I just recorded a 5 min video in cinematic mode. I am trying to transfer it to my Macbook Air from my iPhone 13 Pro via AirDrop. It was taking forever. So I canceled it, and then just tried to upload to the cloud. Still taking forever. I checked the file size, and they're not that bad—about 350 Mb for a 5 min video.

Is there some kind of conversion process happening in the background that is making them take so long to export/upload? They are taking as long as 3 GB 4k files.

Each frame has to have a background mask applied to it just like portrait mode for pictures. 30 frames/second x 5 minutes = 9000 frames that have to be rendered.
Yeah, that makes sense. Will definitely make me think twice about using this format, especially for longer videos! Better to just set up my Fujifilm x-T4.

I shot 4 short videos today in cinematic mode And they take forever to sync to iCloud photos. Is this really true that the system needs to render something before uploading? Normal Videos upload in seconds.

Thank you so much. This did the trick. I needed to process 3 videos. After this the uploading in seconds. I don't know why Apple is writing Upload x Files in the status instead of waiting to process x files + Process now button.

I am uploading ProRes, Cinematic and 10bit HDR files in "seconds" via AirDrop. Also, if you want to wait a while, once the files are processed in Photos, you can highlight (select) the files you want and Drag 'n Drop to the location of choice on your Mac. I think many are making this harder than it is, or am I just incredibly lucky that it goes fast and without a hiccup for me?
