I currently own the PC version of Civ IV and the two expansions. The store page for it shows both PC and Mac versions available. However my copy in my list is saying that it isn't available for my platform. Does anyone know if it will be compatible with both platforms?

Steam Play means that it is compatible with both platforms. I'm having the same issue, so I imagine they just haven't uploaded the mac versions yet.

Yup, I own Civ4 on Steam too and it's not showing up yet. I imagine it'll be here within a couple of weeks.

Same problem, the complete Civ IV pack is showing in the Store as being available for Mac + PC, but in my Library it isn't available for install.

Boo!

You mean hours. It's available to purchase now, it's just some server-side glitch that's preventing the mac version from showing up in the list.

I cant help but feel we have to buy the mac version because the developer wants to squeeze a few dollars out of us

No, you can't buy the Steam Play version, it will tell you you already own it. It's just a glitch.

Edit: Maybe not.

"If you previously owned any of the above games prior to May 12th, 2010, you will have access to them on both Mac and PC. This list will updated as support for other games is added."

Its probably also worth noting that Civ did not make the list

Got the same problem, purchased the complete Civ 4 set this evening but only one of the expansion packs is downloading (Colonization).

Contacted Steam support, just waiting for a reply.

Problem solved I think

My steam client closed suddenly and when I restarted it they were all available for download.

Try restarting steam too, it may work.

Civ4 is Steam Play enabled, it's just a matter of waiting till it gets 'released'.

Nuts, the price of the Civ 4 Complete Pack jumped from $39.99 to $49.99 just now! I knew I should have pulled the trigger earlier.

edit: And now it's back down! Wahoo!

The civ 4 steam page notes:

NOTICE: This game is not supported on volumes formatted as Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive).

Is the extended case sensitive a different filesystem variant? My filesystem is Mac OS extended. I'm hoping that doesn't mean civ4 wont work.

According to Arstechnica, they are different:
# Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is also HFS+, but it has an extra mechanism that avoids corruption of the file system when something bad happens, such as loss of power during a write operation.
# Mac OS Extended (Case Sensitive, Journaled) is HFS+ with a combination of case sensitivity and journaling.

Not sure where that leaves us though. I guess we just need to wait and see if it is indeed a bug.

Yeah, if you check now they have amended their support statement:

"If you previously owned any of the games listed here prior to May 12th, 2010, you will have access to them on both Mac and PC. Games not on the list currently do not qualify for cross-platform support if purchased prior to previously mentioned date."

Yes, but CIVIV is currently for sale as a mac and windows game. If I try to go and re-buy it, steam will not let me, because it knows that I already own it. This is merely a server bug that they are working on. Everyone that owns CIVIV in steam has a mac and windows version.

look at post #7 for confirmation.

Unless the "server bug" is that Steam is not allowing you to repurchase it for the mac.

I got the same result you did when I tested adding Civilization IV to my shopping cart.

I'm not trying to be argumentative; believe me, as a Steam Civ IV owner, I very much want to download it to my MB Pro. As it stands now, if you're a Steam Civ IV owner prior to today, it is impossible to download the game to your Mac. Something needs to be fixed, I just hope they do the right thing and make it available for Mac free for previous owners.

No the server bug isn't preventing you from re-buying it. If you try to re-buy ANY game in steam, it won't let you. Steam will only let you re-buy it to gift it to someone. That is the point behind Steam, you only ever have to have your username and password and you always have your entire collection of Steam games. You don't have to re-buy them because you switched computers or such. Also people on the Steam forums are reporting that people who are buying the games in the store today AFTER the client launched are meeting with the same problems.

I think you may want to re-read the entire thread. That thread refers to Mac users who purchased the bundle today, May 12. Originally there was a bug that was preventing them from downloading the game, separate from what is preventing previous owners purchase it.

Check out post #10 on this thread.

I still can't see the Civ IV for Mac though I already own the PC version through Steam. I've had the game for well over a year for PC... I wonder if that purchase is not compatible with the new SteamPlay...?

The Steam store is now allowing you to repurchase the SteamPlay version even if you already own it prior to today. I did not repurchase it, as this experience has completely soured me of Steam. But there you go.

I sent the following e-mail to Steam Support:

"I have already purchased the Civilization IV Complete package from Steam prior to May 12. Now that Civilization IV is a SteamPlay title with Mac support, I am not able to download it to my Macbook Pro. As a legitimate license holder, I wish to download my legitimately purchased copy of Civilization IV to all platforms Steam supports.

Thank you."

I post any response I receive.

I managed to download it, but now the damn thing keeps locking up after two minutes, forcing a hard reboot.

So far, I am not impressed with Steam or their Civ IV port.

In fact it is one of the buggiest, worst software I have ever tried to use
