Just a heads-up — I discovered that launching Civilization VII via Steam on macOS (tested on Apple Silicon) causes the entire ~/Library/Application Support folder to be marked as excluded from Time Machine backups.
This happens the moment the game is launched. I verified it by running:
tmutil isexcluded ~/Library/Application\ Support
Before launch: not excluded
After launch: excluded
This is dangerous — Application Support contains important app data for tons of apps. If a user relies on Time Machine and doesn’t realize this folder has been excluded, they could lose critical data.
I filed a bug with 2K and provided a screen recording. So far, I’ve only gotten generic support replies about repairing disk permissions and resetting PRAM (on Apple Silicon... lol).
Has anyone else seen this behavior with Civ VII or other games on macOS? Trying to figure out if this is specific to Civ, a Steam launcher issue, or some new sneaky behavior in newer games.
Please test it and post back if you see the same.
