Clamshell Internet?

Bought an external monitor and a stand to run my MacBook in clamshell mode and when I use the internet it is TERRIBLY slow. Anyway to fix this ? Got a mid 2010 MacBook Pro

Are you using ethernet or wireless? If wireless, make sure nothing is blocking the hinge of the MBP. The plastic hinge contains all radios (wifi, bluetooth, etc.) so any obstructions will result in less than optimal performance.

If you are using Wi-Fi, when you option click on the Airport icon in the menubar, what it the transmit rate?
