Just tried and unfortunately the answer is no.
when in clamshell mode, i can see and move the mouse on the ext.monitor, but all it displays is the mouse on a black blank screen.
This is actually a good point and a good idea.I was wondering if it is possible to use the iPad plugged to an external monitor but with its own screen turned off, and I’m not talking setting brightness to zero.
Have to take security authentication into account as well… I believe that’s the reason why clamshell mode will be nonexistent for the iPad.I know, it would seem like a pretty obvious feature to have, but you never know with Apple!

The Mac has the option to use an Apple Watch to unlock and use the Apple Keyboard with TouchID.
Totally understand that it doesn’t need to be every minute. But it could be annoying to open the iPad from clamp shell to unlock or validate payment.1. Authentication isn't required every minute of every use of the machine.... just the unlocking of it and any payment or password authentication and id have thought it would be pretty simple just to unlock the iPad for that authentication then lock it again.
I agree, but some people such as me… does not have an Apple Watch or want one (Android user). But I‘m all for them implementing the Apple Keyboard with TouchID to use with the iPad, now.. that would be the more obvious solution.2. You've already come up with the more elegant solution there... the Apple Watch. wouldn't that be the more obvious solution for simplicity and convenience in this situation too?
This is still a baffling omission.
This was the solution I was looking for. Thank you!Kind of, but not really a supported feature. With the iPad closed, hit CMD+Space on your keyboard. Your wallpaper will appear on screen. And Search is open on your iPad Screen. CMD+Space to get out of that and hit the space bar and type in your passcode. Your iPad screen is still on and can be interacted with, but it’s closed.

Of course, so simple now you point it out…This is the solution: go to Settings, Display & Brightness, then disable the Lock/Unlock toggle.
You can also adjust the Auto-lock value to avoid the iPad going to sleep after a while. In that case, keep in mind that you need to set the iPad in standby before closing the cover if you're not using it.
Would be perfect for M1 Air with touchID!Not really.
