Hi,
My daughter has a clamshell with 300mhz processor and upgraded memory 256mb + standard 32mb running osx10.2 and she has problems watching videos on youtube.

Now are there any settings that i can change to get this running for her? as she is considering selling it if nothing can be done

Is it a processor thing?

It's a processor thing. My daughter has the same issue, but she has 544 MB of RAM. (32+512.)

Just to second, yes, it's definitely the processor. My mom had trouble watching YouTube clips on her 700Mhz G3 iBook (until we closed every single other program but Safari), so I can just imagine it on a 300Mhz G3.

Yup, it's definitely a processor issue. While the G3 is a workhorse, it wasn't intended for demanding processes like video and streaming. With the iBook listed in my sig I sometimes have problems with youtube also. Usually on longer movies. Like mentioned above, wait for the whole video to load, that makes a big difference. Of course if there are programs open that you don't need, get out of them.

Thanks for the advice guys!
I will try those tips later, but i suspect with the 300mhz processor it wont be able to cope still :(

Use firefox

Use firefox instead of Safari, Safari takes many resources and even in my G4 1.33 they play sluggish, but in Firefox they play perfect. I have a G3 366mhz and its fine in firefox. :apple:

Also a big part of this is that you only have 4mb of vram. Even with the 466 graphite clamshell and 8mb of vram, flash video streaming is a little annoying. Streaming wma's actually is better. It is sad but it may be that the clamshells cannot cope with "web 2.0" stuff.

It has nothing to do with VRAM. Flash video takes more main processor horsepower to decode than most other formats at the same resolution. As long as you have a fully accelerated video card (Anything other than Rage IIc in OS X 10.1.5 or later,) then VRAM doesn't make any difference for playing video. (Until you get to the VERY recent video cards that do video decoding onboard.)

I use my Clamshell as a main computer, and I think you need to upgrade the harddrive from 10GB to 160GB like what I did and it works without any lag.
