Clarification on the new trackpad please!

So, I realize that the new MacBook/MBP trackpad can be pressed and acts like a button. My question is, can you simply do tap gestures on the trackpad (one finger for left click, two for right click, etc) without having to actuate the button underneath?

yes, no need to actuate the button...one/two finger taps work.
