Clash of clans locked out

Apparently, there is a an update for clash of clans. But what is weird is that I can't play at all if I don't update. Now I have a lot going in the game and I also have a limited plan and don't want to update over 3G. It's gonna be at least a couple days before I get to a wifi place. This is ludicrous.

Why can't I just play. I am ok if I don't try the upgrades and all.
