Hello,

As you may have noticed, I am new to this forum. I came here due to the fact that this community is more flexible in terms of jailbreak discussion etc in comparison to the official Apple community page. However, enough introduction. Let me get to the point.

I own an iPod Touch 5th Generation. When purchased, it came pre-installed with iOS 7 and, strangely enough, bear a strong desire or the now over 2 year old operating system iOS 6. You're probably thinking, "Stop living in the past!" however, for what I need my iTouch for, it's fairly understandable that I would usually not have any need for the newer OS such as iOS 7, or iOS 8 (Which runs very poorly on the iTouch 5). My reasons for wanting the iOS 6 operating system for my device is simply because the user interface is much more preferable in my eyes than the later iOS 7. The flatter, brighter design is undoubtedly not to my taste at all. I have had this opinion for nearly a year now, but have never been able to successfully downgrade my device for obvious reasons (6.1.3 is no longer signed, iTunes thus refuses to restore with that firmware blah blah blah).

Recently, it is apparent that a tool has been developed that has been claimed to be able to successfully downgrade an iOS device running iOS 6, 7 or 8 etc. At first, like any of you reading this probably would, I presumed this was some sort of scam. After claims had been made that the tool infact worked perfectly for them (for example on their Facebook page). My question is, has anyone here tried this? Has it worked for you?

I was thinking about jailbreaking too for an iOS 6 theme. My problem is (Yes, indeed I do sound fussy) that the themes out there currently (that I've seen) are limited in their redesigns. For example, I could apply an iOS 6 theme for its icons, a classic lock screen tweak and a status bar tweak, but the settings menu layout would still be the same. Allow me to demonstrate.

Here's it what the settings menu would look like if I applied specifically "iOS 6 Complete for iOS 7" theme:

As impressive as it looks, I was hoping there'd be something else able to replicate the look of the classic UI, like so:

The only problem with jailbreaking would be, if I wished to unjailbreak it would require me to restore my device via iTunes. Doing this would result in the installation of iOS 8(.1.2) which I do not want whatsoever.

Any help/helpful opinions regarding this would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

thanks for your well thought out thread. Sadly, what you are seeking is not possible, I'm afraid.

What I eventually did was purchase (lucky for me, right here on MacRumors) a current iPod touch that had 6.1.3 on it, so no need to seek a 'downgrade'.

I would think that would also be your only solution unless a more seasoned member can stir us both in another direction.

Thanks for your reply.

Perhaps when I have the funds, I will replace my iTouch. In the meantime I will hold out for any other methods or advice.

Once again, much appreciated.

Glad my iPod touch 5 32gb blue is still running 6.1.2 jailbroken like a champ :) apple gave it to me for free even :D

Unfortunately that means if you need to restore (Unjailbreak) you will have to update to iOS 8 :/

Also, how did you receive a free one? :O

lol i don't mess with it, and it runs fine. and i was having a lot of problems with my iMac and kept complaining and they gave me the choice of either a 3tb time capsule or an iPod touch. i chose the touch.

Would it be worth jailbreaking then?

I'm not new to this, as I have jailbroken before for an iOS 6 theme therefore I would know what I'm doing. My concern is if I would ever want to unjailbreak it would force me to update to the latest iOS 8 version which runs very poorly on the iPod Touch 5th Gen. However, performance of the device should be fine as long as I'm careful with what tweaks I use, right?

But since my device runs 7.1.1, would it be worth jailbreaking? Are most Cydia tweaks updated for the latest operating system? Obviously I don't want to jump right into jailbreaking with these questions still unanswered for me, but any advice would be much appreciated.

You could buy a 4th gen iPod touch off eBay or an iPhone 4. The 4th gen iTouch runs iOS 6.1.6 as the latest and the iPhone 4 runs iOS 7.1.2 as the latest, so you would always be able to restore.

I thought about it, but the hardware for the two devices are very outdated. For example, the iPhone 4 may be able to run iOS 7, yes - but like the 4s runs iOS 8, it is very slow.

Thank you for your reply though.
