Clean install 2008 Macbook

Hey guys,

I picked up two early 2008 MacBooks. I will be putting in SSDs and upgrading the RAM (1x4, 1x2) but I also want to do a clean install with the latest possible OS.

I currently have 10.7, won't let me upgrade to 10.11. Is there any other ones I can upgrade to?

How do I do a clean install? I have no idea how to boot to disk utility, and I don't have any CDs.
