I'm planning on upgrading my hard disk but is it possible to do a clean install of leopard and just restore selected files from a time machine backup? (the TM files will be from the old leopard installation)

use Migration Assistant to choose which stuff you want to migrate over. or if you know where all the stuff is you can simply drag it over from the Backups.backupdb folder on your Time Machine disk.
