I want to pretty much clone my iMac to my new MBP but I am not quite sure the best way to do this.

Currently, my iMac is backing up through Time Machine to my external hard drive.

Is it better to use migration assistant to bring over all the programs, files, or should I do a fresh install of everything?

Are there any cons of doing this?

I don't want to bring any unnecessary files over potentially.

Thanks in advance.

The migration assistant will copy only those things that are needed from the users you select, my suggestion is to go ahead with it.

Does this include copying all the software updates? If I can remember correctly, when you first start up a brand new mac, it asks if you want to transfer files using time machine. I've never done this before so any input is appreciated.

Just to follow up: I used time machine and it worked flawlessly. My MBP is an exact clone to my iMac. All I really had to do additionally was install some updates and reactivate my creative suite and I'm off to the races.
