Sorry if this was already discussed.

Before, I had Snow Leopard on my HDD.
Now I have just installed Mavericks on a usb flash drive, so it does not have enough space to copy all the applications via Migration Assistant. However, I have many mailboxes (around 30) in my old Mail, and I want to copy them to Mavericks. Which way is optimal? I tried to copy folders "Mail" and "Mail Attachments" and .plst file, but it did not work: new Mail asks me to setup my mail account and quits when I refuse.

It is normal that you have to setup your account.

Just do it, then use : File / Import Mailboxes, "Apple Mail", Continue, browse to :

Snow Leopard HD / Users / yourusername / Library / Mail

In this folder you will find a Mailboxes folder and some other showing your mail account name(s).

Click "Choose" to import.
