Is doing a clean install of Snow Leopard and immediately upgrading to Mavericks via Mac App Store the same thing as doing a clean install of Mavericks?

Well technically no... a clean install would be installing Mavs to a bare naked drive outright. That said, it is very very close to a clean install. The idea and purported benefit of a clean install is to get rid of all the file cruft one accumulates over time from installing different apps and data. If you do a clean install of SL then Mavs right after, you won't have any of this left over junk anyway, so it will be almost the same as a clean install.
