I am using ML 10.8.5. I'm beginning to have frequent freezes. What would be the least intensive way to remedy this? Can I just re-install ML or do I need to do a 'clean install'?

What have you been doing when this "freezing" occurs?
What happens? Do you get the spinning beach ball? By "freeze" do you mean you can do absolutely nothing? How do you get out of that state?

When it freezes it does nothing. No spinning beach ball and at startup it does nothing. Such that I hold the Power button 10 secs, wait about 2 secs, then try powering up again.
As far as 'console log', I'm not fluent in Unix ~ cmd line stuff.
Console is an application in the utilities folder /Applications/Utilities
Ever thing it logs has a time stamp, try to find what it said around the time the freezing occurred.
