Just an FYI, if you are looking to clean like this again it is best to use rubbing-alcohol. First off, REMOVE THE BATTERY if your particular laptop allows you to. Don't puddle the liquid as you said. Alcohol is often used directly on electronics to clean them when they are not active, so it is safer for this type of maintenance. Not only that, but its a bit more effective at clearing dirt versus water. Just make sure you don't use it on the screen. Give the laptop ample time to dry if you did accidentally puddle the alcohol internally.
