Cleaning the SB Milanese Loop?

I am concerned about removing the SB ML and in the process. scratching the watch.

Is it necessary to remove the band completely from the S4 SS SB Watch before cleaning it? Can it be disengaged from the loop lug and just left attached at the other side? Is there a way to leave the band attached at both ends and still clean it ?
