I have been asked to transfer an old reel to reel tape recording to CD and clean it up. The recording is family memories; children singing, reminiscings of old now passed away relatives etc. It was recorded during the 1960's by my Uncle with a cheap mic so the recordings are poor to start with. I now have it digitized using Audio Hijack but I want to clean it up the best i can without having to spend any/much money as this is a one off project. Any suggestions most welcome.

You could grab a program like Audacity (on the free side) - it has various plug-ins for noise reduction etc. that you can apply to your audio recording. Use them sparingly for best results though.
