When a new email comes in and it shows in the notification centre when you pull it down, I noticed that there is an option of 'clearing' this email.

However, I assumed that when you clear it from the pull down screen, it would also clear the email (or at least mark it as read or something) from the Mail app, but it doesn't? You still have to go into the Mail app and read or delete it - what is the point of having the option of clearing it from the pull down menu when you still need to go into the Mail app to address it?

You've misunderstood the idea behind notifications then. It's just notifying you that you have something you can tend to. If you dismiss it on notification center, you still haven't "Read" it, so there's not a reason to change the read flag.
