Click and drag photo question

On a @ occasions I dragged a photo to my desk top and the photo collapsed! I had to do a restart to correct this. Does any one know the cause? I need some help please.

I was getting a blank image that said pdf.

You're not making any sense. What are you trying to do?

If I drag a photo off a site page to my desk top that photo appears on my desk top. But on on two occasions the photo that I dragged to my desk top did not appear.I stead it was just a blank image. But I could see it through quick look. I had to restart my mac to correct this.
